This cover illustration is taken from the last section of a mini-narrative centered around a fictional family of merchants in Florence in the mid-1400's.

Several of these fictional inserts throughout the book bring the historical context to life, relating daily occurrences of representative characters. In this section, generational differences between the family members highlight evolving attitudes towards knowledge, art, and religion.
